Lightroom (Adobe Photoshop Lightroom) is primarily a software for editing and managing digital images. The program is available for both Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows systems. It specializes in the processing of raw data generated by digital cameras.

Owing to the fact that professional-quality photo equipment is becoming less and less expensive, more and more amateur photographers have access to first-class digital cameras. Apart from a feeling for the right detail and moment, the quality of the picture editing and management of large amounts of data are playing an ever-greater role. This is one of the strengths of professional photographers who have learned how to use image-editing programs such as Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom and can offer Presets. The ability to store special settings as Lightroom Presets facilitates the work of many photographers and, in addition, enables them to impart their individual style to other photographers, professionals and amateurs alike.

Of course, there are numerous programs out there that enable image editing. Some are free of charge and many a waste of time, but let’s focus on Adobe Lightroom.

Adobe Lightroom is first and foremost software for cataloging and managing digital image data. In addition, editing steps can be undertaken. For professionals, the provider Adobe recommends a combination of Photoshop and Lightroom, which can also be acquired in a package as a subscription. The program, which is available for both Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows systems, specializes in the management of raw data of digital reflex cameras, system cameras, and now also compact cameras. It is largely intuitive and is easy to understand. Lightroom and the accompanying library are particularly well suited for viewing, organizing, and categorizing large volumes of image material. A big advantage is that image editing is done “non-destructively.” The original RAW file is always preserved in the database in its original state. If changes are made to the image, they are stored separately in a second file. Using Lightroom, a so-called XMP file containing the metadata can be generated.

With its various modules and the broad range of processing options Lightroom is especially recommended for professional photographers and ambitious amateurs.

The following modules are available: A library primarily serves to manage image material. Photos that are imported to Lightroom are initially saved in the library, where they can be assigned keywords, locations, markings, or evaluations. The actual image editing takes place in the development module. Apart from the detail, tonal value corrections, and color temperature adjustment, the sharpness, gradation, and many other values can be adjusted. In addition to individual editing, self-defined default settings – Lightroom Presets – can be used. Adobe Lightroom also offers various tools for publishing photos. The book function enables the user to create a photo book that can be ordered directly via the provider’s blurb. With the help of the slide show module, presentations of selected image data can be put together on the monitor, played, and saved as a PDF document. In the print module, you can find numerous methods for designing print sheets, including contact and picture collections, methods of arranging different-sized images on one page, and much more. The web module enables users to create web presentations of the pictorial material, either with the help of existing templates or using ones they have created themselves.

The first version, Lightroom 1, came out in 2007. A German-language variant, Lightroom 2, has existed since 2008. Since then, there have been six updates and different intermediate steps with further minor improvements. The current state is represented by the separate software Lightroom 6.14 (standalone version) and the Cloud variant CC 2019 8.3.1. The last major improvement to Version 6 was a facial recognition feature enabling users to search for people in their own databases. With the new HDR photo merge, several images with different exposures can be combined into an optimum image. The function can also be used to join together a number of photos, which can be arranged into panorama images more easily with the new panorama function. Animal photographers are delighted about the enhanced red-eye effect, which can now be used more easily with animal eyes. Additionally, a few improvements were made to already existing functions, such as the slide show and the web module. A touch function for app usage was also new. In versions 6.1 to 6.5, minor improvements were made (or annulled) continually, mainly concerning the mobile version for Android and iOS, as well as online usage.

Adobe Lightroom is used by many professionals as well as hobby photographers. With its different modules and editing possibilities, Lightroom is recommendable for every photographer, professional and amateur. The value for money is currently unbeatable!

Lightroom 6 standalone version is no longer available. If you're interested in working with Lightroom you can buy Adobe Lightroom Classic CC via Adobe's subscription plans.
